How to use this site
- Spin the globe: drag it with your finger or mouse. It also rotates slowly on its own.
- Pins: each red pulsing pin marks a hotspot; widespread viruses have several pins. Bigger pins = more cases there (log scale). Tap a pin for details and all its pins turn white.
- Virus list: tap any virus to fly the globe to its location and see fatality rate, case numbers, how it spreads and its treatment.
- Fatality chart: scroll to the bar chart comparing every virus; tap a bar to select it, and swipe sideways on a phone.
- Latest developments: scroll down for updates. Use the filter buttons (Watch, Outbreak, etc.) to narrow them.
- Auto-refresh: the page refreshes every 30 minutes (see the countdown at the top). Tap Refresh now to update instantly.
- AI briefing: press Generate AI briefing in the news section; once on, it renews every 30 minutes.

Deadliest viruses · ranked by fatality rate
Ranked by case-fatality rate (share of infected people who die). By total deaths per year, HIV, flu and rabies would rank higher.

Pin sizes use rough order-of-magnitude estimates (recent years or major outbreaks; HIV = people living with it; flu = approximate yearly infections split among strains). Figures are reference estimates from public WHO/CDC sources and vary by outbreak and care access. The page itself cannot pull live wire feeds; for real-time official updates see WHO Outbreak News and CDC Outbreaks. The AI briefing is generated text, not a news wire.
